Material choice

Why Aluminium Frames Suit Australian Sites

Australia's golf buggy fleet runs from tropical Queensland courses to the salt-laden coastal strips of NSW and Victoria. Steel frames lose that argument: aluminium does not form red rust, and it cuts dead weight off the vehicle.

No red rust — ever

Aluminium forms a natural, self-repairing oxide layer the moment it is exposed to air. A powder-coated 6xxx aluminium frame will not produce the bleeding rust stains that make a steel chassis look derelict after a few coastal seasons.

Coating specified by corrosivity zone

Powder coating is applied to AS 3715:2025, which classifies coatings against the atmospheric corrosivity zones of AS 4312. Coastal sites generally fall in the C3 to C5 range, and splash zones can reach CX; we match coating grade and film build to the destination site rather than quoting one blanket specification.

Galvanic isolation at every fastener

In salt air the real risk is not the aluminium — it is aluminium touching stainless steel with salt water as the electrolyte. We specify nylon washers, plastic bushes or isolating tape at stainless fixings so the coating does not blister and the frame does not pit around the bolt holes.

Less weight, more range per charge

An aluminium chassis is substantially lighter than the equivalent steel structure, which reduces the energy needed to move the buggy. On lithium-powered fleets that translates into more usable range and easier handling on soft turf.

Alloy selection: 6063-T5 as standard, 6061-T6 where it carries load

We hold both alloys and choose per component rather than per project:

  • 6063-T5 — the default for chassis rails, seat frames, canopy frames and visible members. Smooth post-extrusion surface, excellent weldability and the best base for powder coating or anodising.

  • 6061-T6 — used for load-bearing brackets, suspension-adjacent members and fittings where higher tensile strength matters more than surface appearance.

Note on terminology: 6xxx alloys are corrosion-resistant extrusion alloys, not "marine grade" aluminium. In Australian practice "marine grade" refers to the 5xxx sheet alloys such as 5052 and 5083. We would rather state the alloy and the coating specification precisely than use a label that does not apply.

What a Frame Set Actually Contains

A "golf cart frame" is not one part. Based on the drawings we currently run in production, a full buggy frame set typically breaks down into the following assemblies — and we produce all of them, in aluminium, to drawing.

Chassis & floor structure

Main chassis rails, cross members, floor support frames and under-seat support members, formed from bent rectangular and square tube.

Seat frames & backrests

Front and rear seat support brackets, backrest frames, front backrest brackets, armrest and rear backrest connectors for single-row and multi-row vehicles.

Canopy / roof frames

Complete roof frame assemblies for 2-seat and 4-seat configurations, including reinforcement pieces, connecting lugs and mounting brackets.

Manufacturing process

From Aluminium Tube to Finished Frame

Each frame is produced to the confirmed drawing, covering bending, welding, surface treatment and final checking before shipment. Nothing is subcontracted to an unrelated workshop — the same plant that extrudes the profile also forms and finishes the frame.

Beyond the bare frame

Some customers want the metalwork and nothing else — they weld, paint and assemble in their own workshop. Others would rather receive something that rolls off the pallet and straight into their assembly line.

Both are available from the same drawings. A complete rolling chassis build can include:

  • Suspension and steering components mounted and aligned

  • Alloy wheels and tyres fitted

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you need from us to quote a golf buggy frame?

Send your drawing (DWG, DXF or PDF), or 3D data (STEP, SLDPRT, IGES) if you have it. Along with the drawing, tell us: material or alloy preference, surface finish and colour, quantity per order, and the destination port.

If you only have a physical sample, send photos with overall dimensions and we will advise what is needed to reverse-engineer production drawings.

Can you supply only part of the frame, not the whole set?

Yes. Many customers buy individual assemblies — canopy frames, seat support brackets, seat belt mounting assemblies or controller plates — rather than a complete chassis. The parts are produced to your drawing either way; only the packing and the set-marking change.

Which aluminium alloy will you use for our chassis?

6063-T5 is our default for chassis rails, seat frames and canopy frames — it extrudes cleanly, welds well and takes powder coating or anodising with a good surface finish. Where a member carries concentrated load, we will propose 6061-T6 instead and explain the trade-off in weight, weldability and price.

If your drawing specifies an alloy, we produce to that specification and confirm the mill certificate with the order.

How do you protect an aluminium frame for Australian coastal conditions?

Three things matter. First, coating grade — powder coating is specified to AS 3715:2025 against the AS 4312 corrosivity category of the installation site, typically C3 to C5 for coastal Australia and up to CX in splash zones. Second, film build — 60–80 µm is standard architectural thickness, and we go to 80–120 µm where exposure is severe. Third, isolation — wherever stainless fasteners contact aluminium, we supply isolating washers or bushes so the joint does not blister in salt air.

Neutral salt spray testing to AS 2331.3.1 can be arranged where your project specification calls for it.

Does an aluminium frame mean it is weaker than steel?

Not in a properly designed frame. Aluminium is lighter per unit volume, so the frame is usually designed with larger section dimensions to reach the required stiffness. That is exactly why we work from your drawings and can reference the limit state design methodology of AS/NZS 1664.1 when proportioning aluminium structural members.

What aluminium buys you in an outdoor fleet is the absence of red rust, no repainting cycle, and less weight for the motor to move.

Where are the frames manufactured and what does that mean for Australian anti-dumping duties?

The frames are manufactured at our own plant in Rayong, Thailand — extrusion, bending, welding, finishing and packing all happen on site, which is what supports a Thai certificate of origin.

Australia's anti-dumping measures on aluminium extrusions currently cover goods exported from China, Malaysia and Vietnam; Thailand is not a country named in those measures. We cannot decide duty treatment for you — origin determination, tariff classification and the applicable rate are always self-assessed by the importer or their customs broker. What we can do is provide the manufacturing records, mill certificates and origin documentation your broker needs to make that assessment.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

The minimum is typically 10 sets per frame design, and lead time runs about 21 days for orders up to 10 sets. Larger volumes and new frame designs are confirmed individually at order stage, because they depend on extrusion die availability and the number of welded assemblies involved.

Can these frames be used on public roads in Australia?

These frames are designed for on-site and private-property use — golf courses, resorts, retirement villages, councils, schools, landscaping and construction sites. Road use is regulated separately by each state and territory and varies widely. Victoria, for example, does not register golf cars and permits only very limited road movement; Queensland allows conditional registration within defined travel zones with a 20 km/h limit; New South Wales handles it through a conditional registration vehicle sheet.

We supply the structure — you or your customer confirm registration requirements with the relevant state authority.

How are the frames packed for ocean freight?

Frames are packed as complete sets with surface protection between parts, secured onto pallets or into steel stillages depending on volume and container fill. The packing scheme is agreed before production so that unpacking on your line matches the assembly sequence.

Can you brand the frames for our own label?

Yes. OEM and private-label production is standard for us — the frame is simply manufactured to your drawing. Marking, labels and packing documentation can carry your brand rather than ours.
